My son and I recently spent a weekend in the “city that never sleeps”—New York.
We enjoyed many of the sites—Central Park, the Empire State Building, the Museum of Modern Art, Macy’s and Mick’s favorite indulgences—Dylan’s Candy Bar Store and Nintendo World!
As we were strolling along Fifth Avenue one gorgeous afternoon enjoying the sunshine and blue skies, we turned the corner and all of a sudden got BLASTED with smelly exhaust fumes from a rusty old delivery truck.
That was a grim reminder to me that toxins are EVERYWHERE.
Ours is a toxic world.
Environmental pollutants (like engine exhaust, smokestacks from factories, etc.) are all around us and practically impossible to avoid 100%.
Plus there are common substances that you come into contact with on a daily basis that are toxic to your body.
They include:
Food additives, preservatives and colorings in processed foods (especially tartrazine, a yellow food coloring)
Solvents such as household cleaning products or formaldehyde
Old, worn out hormones
Pesticides (bug killers) or herbicides (weed killers)
Drugs (ALL kinds–including OTC, prescription and “recreational”)
Alcohol
Cigarette smoke
Heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel and aluminum)
Naturally occurring toxins in foods and herbs
With all of these potential poisons around, it’s understandable that people in increasing numbers are getting concerned about cleansing and detoxing.
And it’s not surprising that various types of cleanses and detox products are popping up left and right!
Now, while the intent behind these measures is valid, the problem is many people aren’t aware of the potential dangers.
And as a result, instead of being “cleaner,” you can end up anything BUT, plus make the toxins that are inside of you even MORE harmful.
Here’s how:
Stir ’em up–then what?
Cleanses and detox products are designed to help loosen, free and release toxins from your cells and tissues.
OK so far.
But then the more important part of this is that your body actually needs to be able to get RID of those toxins.
Because if you don’t, they can get dumped into circulation, and that makes them even MORE deadly than they were to you when they were stored in your cells.
You see, when toxins are actively flowing through your bloodstream, they can create a tsunami of free radical damage to your cells.
This can lead to everything from accelerated aging to atherosclerosis to inflammatory disease and eventually if your DNA is damaged enough, cancer.
Talk about a good intention blowing up in your face!
And people who are in a more fragile state of health to begin with can quickly become dangerously ill when they stir up toxins.
This includes:
People who have recently undergone surgery
The elderly
Pregnant women
People with challenged or weakened immune systems
People fighting infections
Out with the old, in with the new
A common mistake that people make when cleansing or detoxing is that they “clean themselves out” then turn around and put the toxins back in all over again!
Step one in any detox protocol MUST be to eliminate the toxins from your environment to begin with.
So, for example, if you want to cleanse your colon, you first need to look at what may be causing it to get dirty to begin with–and most times, that’s a direct reflection of your DIET.
That means that you can’t exist on fast foods or processed junk and think you’re OK because you use your favorite colon cleanse formula once a week. You’re only fooling yourself AND harming your body.
It doesn’t happen overnight
Ours is an instant gratification society–and that also applies to detoxing.
People expect immediate results, but it ain’t gonna happen.
Cleansing and detoxing takes time, my friend. You certainly did not get toxic overnight, and you’re not going to be able to eliminate all those toxins overnight either.
Plus it’s more involved than just popping a cleanse or detox formula.
In addition to eliminating the sources of toxins like I mentioned above, you also need to make sure your organs of elimination–especially the bowels and liver–are in tip-top shape and that your body has the nutrients and fiber it needs to carry out a complete detox.
A safe, natural detox
Whether or not you choose to use a cleanse or detox product is up to you; however, I would suggest if you do so, you do it under the direction of a holistic practitioner.
Plus here are some safe, natural, very effective detox measures you can take to help make your body squeaky clean on the inside and more importantly, STAY that way!
1) Eat nutritious foods & keep digestion efficient
This is far and away the most important thing you can do.
Eating real fiber-rich foods and having smooth digestion helps boost your body’s natural detox capability in these 4 impressive ways:
- You get more of the vital nutrients that your liver needs to make enzymes and remove poisons from your body.
- Toxins can be safely eliminated with your bowel movements instead of getting reabsorbed into your system if you’re constipated.
- You’ll be getting more fiber, which binds to many toxins and helpssweep them out of your body.
- You help conserve your stomach’s hydrochloric acid supply so it can help protect you from food-borne toxins.
2) Drink pure water |
Water is essential for helping to flush toxins out of your body and keeping your bowels running smoothly.
Eight glasses a day should be your minimum.
A good way to tell if you’re drinking enough water is to look at your urine. If it’s dark yellow at any time other than first thing in the morning, you likely need more water.
3) Consider supplementing with Vitamins C and E and lipoic acid
Vitamin C protects your cells from free radicals and binds with toxic metals like lead, mercury and aluminum so your body can eliminate them.
Plus Vitamin E protects your cells when toxins are “freed up” and become potentially more dangerous.
And lipoic acid is especially supportive of your liver–which as primary organ of detox is responsible for filtering toxins out of your bloodstream.
The daily doses recommended by many experts are 500 – 1,000 mg. of Vitamin C, 200 – 1,200 IUs of Vitamin E and 400 – 600 mg. of lipoic acid each day.
4) Supplement with B12 if necessary
Vitamin B12 is also a crucial nutrient for proper functioning of your liver’s detoxing process.
It also happens to be one of the most widely deficient nutrients, especially for people who have had a typical modern diet.
You see, Vitamin B12 is tricky for your body to absorb–it requires efficient digestion and adequate stomach acid.
So if your diet has been less than stellar and your digestion not the best, or if you’ve taken acid reducers for a long time, chances are good that you may be lacking in this vital nutrient.
But that can be a breeze to turn around by supplementing with Hydroxaden 2.5.
Hydroxaden 2.5 is a convenient Vitamin B12 spray that gives you a daily dose of B12 in the quality form of hydroxocobalamin.
Five sprays under your tongue each day give you the 2.5 mg. of B12 that is recommended by experts. Sublingual B12 sprays have been shown to be very effective because they’re directly absorbed into the bloodstream, instead of risking poor absorption in the digestive tract.
Toxins are everywhere and they’re not leaving our world anytime soon!
But when you do all you can to eliminate them from your life and take safe, natural measures to keep your body clean on the inside, you are helping to minimize their health-destroying power over YOU!
To your health,
Sherry Brescia
